~B.E. Aware~
started out as a fundraiser for my cousin Patty.
Patty was diagnosed with brain cancer in April of 2004.
Patty had surgery to remove a two centimeter tumor. She was given anywhere from four months to one year to live. Things were looking hopeful for awhile and there was no sign of the tumor growing back.
Then in January of 2005, Patty started having seizures again.
By April the tumor had grown back and she had to have a second surgery to remove the tumor again. This time she was only given a four to six month chance to live.
Patty fought this battle with cancer to the very end. She was not ready to leave her son Jason and her husband Ed. She was more worried about her two guys then she was about herself.
You see, her son Jason has "Down Syndrome" and Patty was a very active woman when it came to Jason. She would do anything for him. She was always a cheer leader or a coach for all his activities. She was always on the go. When she got done with her job then she was off to Jason’s activities. Patty was always helping out the Special Olympics, which Jason participated a lot in. She herself has done many fundraisers. She would be out there recruiting as many people as she could get, garnering donations from vendors to help cut costs. This, along with our deep love for Patty is why we felt we had to do something extra special for her.
While we were discussing the food menu for Patty’s fundraiser we came up with an idea of creating bracelets. So when my friend Eileen and I got home we both got on the internet and started doing some research. We found out the American Cancer Society recognizes sixteen forms of cancer.
Each cancer had a color associated with it.
From there we started searching for some beading material. We searched many of websites until we found fiber optic beads or better known as “cat’s eye beads”. Within a week we were making the first of our bracelets. Once we started showing them to our co-workers the demand for them grew and grew!
That's is when Eileen and I decided to turn it into a nonprofit organization.
From June till September, any funds we raised from bracelets went to Patty and her family. It kept on doing so well that my friend and I started this nonprofit organization called
B.E. Aware.
All of the proceeds from these bracelets are donated to different charities and organizations in the Fargo/Moorhead, North Dakota area.
We, ourselves do not profit from this in any way.
We do it purely for the enjoyment of knowing that this money is helping someone else in some way, shape or form.
We do this all in memory of Patty.
Patty lost her battle with cancer and passed away August 3rd, 2005 at the young age of 50.
She is so greatly missed by so many.
She will be remembered always...and we hope to honor her memory with our efforts.
